Toyota is working to promote a safe driving environment through Toyota Safety Features and will always be one of Toyota’s top priorities. We’re aiming for a society with no traffic accident casualties. According to WHO, every year 1.24 million people worldwide die in traffic accidents, making it the 8th cause of death. If these fatalities go on the same rate, it will become the 5th cause of death. Toyota is one of the world’s leading automobile brands. It spends over 1 million $ every hour on research and development.

Toyota Safety Features

Toyota has introduced amazing features such as Toyota Safety Sense in its new vehicles for safety of driver, passengers and the vehicles and pedestrians roaming around. It uses high quality sensors for its operations. With Toyota safety features you are prepared for anything on the road because you know you are in safe hands. Read below in detail.

Toyota Safety Sense

Toyota launched Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) is one of the best features launched by Toyota to protect passengers and pedestrians from harm. It is devised to guard driver, passengers, pedestrians and people in other vehicles. It is composed of multi-featured active safety packages affixed by programmed pre-collision warning and braking system. TSS is intended to support the driver’s awareness, management and vehicle maneuver over a wide range of speeds under certain conditions. TSS helps in three main areas of accidents protection: mitigating or preventing frontal collisions, keeping the drivers from changing lanes unnecessarily and improving road safety during night driving.

TSS is offered in two packages.  One is TSS-C, that is offered in small and compact vehicles while TSS-P is offered in Mid-sized and large vehicles.

Toyota Safety Sense-C has three main functions: active safety technology, which includes Camera and Laser for excellent performance and dependability. This package prevents collisions in varied range of speeds.

  • PCS – Pre Collision System (PCS)
  • Lane Departure Alert System (LDA)
  • Vehicle Detection
  • Automatic High Beams (AHB)

Toyota Safety Sense-P has an in-vehicle camera and millimeter wave radar affixed at the front grille for improved performance and more functionality.

It has the features of:

  • Pre-Collision system with Pedestrian detection function (PCS w/PD)
  • Vehicle detection and Pedestrian detection
  • Automatic High Beams (AHB)
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC)
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist Function (LDA w/SA) in EPS equipped vehicles

Pre-Collision System

TSS-C, Pre-Collision System uses an in-vehicle camera to and laser to detect the vehicle at the front of our vehicle. When PCS figures the probability of front collision, it stimulates the driver to take shifty action and brake by utilizing audile and visual alert. If the driver observes the risk of collision and applies brakes, than the system may providing the additional brake force using Brake assist. If the driver does not apply the brakes in set time, it will automatically determine the possibility of collision and slow down the vehicle to avoid collision.

Pre-Collision System

Lane Departure Alert (LDA)

The lane departure alert system figures out that the car is deviating from its lane unintentionally, it alerts the driver through audile and visual alert. The driver should immediately check the road situation at the moment and manage the steering wheel to move the vehicle back to the center of the lane. LDA is designed to operate at speed of 32 mph or above usually on fairly straight roads. Furthermore, the LDA functions of TSS-P of EPS equipped vehicles will also have the Steering Assist function. When this function is enabled, the vehicle figures out automatically that it is departing from the lane and will alert the driver by audio and visual alert and will also contribute some minor counteractive steering inputs to the steering wheel for a moment to keep the vehicle in its lane.

Automatic High Beams (AHB)

The Automatic High Beams (AHB) feature is available in both TSS-P and TSS-C. It is a safety structure designed to help drivers to see what is ahead at night time without dazzling other drivers. It uses an in-vehicle camera to detect tail lights of the vehicles ahead and incoming vehicles and automatically adjustments between the high and low beams. This feature provides the driver with the best possible vision at night by using both beams interchangeably without disturbing the other drivers. It enables the driver to see the pedestrians and hindrances earlier. It functions at the speed of 25 mph or above.

Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection Function (PCS w/PD)

It is a wonderful development in the Toyota safety features to detect pedestrians and avoid collsions. In TSS-P, PCS uses an in-vehicle camera and millimeter radar at the front grille to detect the vehicle in the front. The TSS-P package in which PCS in included is able to detect vehicles and pedestrians in front of our vehicle. PCS detects the pedestrians on the basis of size, profile and motion. On some conditions the pedestrians cannot be detected due to the surrounding brightness, posture, motion, size and angle of the pedestrian averting it to operate. If PCS figures out the possibility of frontal collision with a pedestrian, it prompts the driver to take speedy action and apply the brakes, by audile and visual alarms. If driver observes the threat and applies the brake, it helps the vehicle to stop by using the brake assist feature.

If the driver does not apply brakes in the meantime, it will determine the probability of collision and automatically apply the brakes and reduce the chance of collision and avoid crash in some cases.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

TSS-P vehicles embrace the quality of Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) function. It is much similar to the conventional constant speed cruise control system, but it has additional features like vehicle to vehicle distance control mode through which the driver can set a minimum distance with the foregoing vehicle at lower speed. Once the speed is set, minimum 28 mph or above, it uses in-vehicle camera and millimeter radar mounted at the front grille to determine the speed of the preceding vehicle.

If the preceding vehicle is moving at a lower speed than our set speed or the minimum set distance, it has the option of automatically slowing the vehicle without having to turn off cruise control. If in case more reduction in speed is required, it will automatically apply brakes too and alert the driver through audile and visual alerts and turn on the brake lights. When there is no longer a foregoing vehicle, it will automatically speed up to the limit assigned and the vehicle to vehicle distance set by the driver and start regular cruise.

The DRCC is devised to operate at speed of 25 mph to 110 mph. Though, the minimum speed to initiate DRCC is 28 mph. Now, Toyota has also launched its full speed DRCC in its new vehicles, that would be able to operate below 25 mph too with acceleration/deceleration, speed matching, and stopping. The Full Speed DRCC would be able to work at speed of 0-110 mph. It is one of the major improvements in Toyota Safety features.
